"The Upper Float"

The Upper Float usually starts just north of the Conasauga, Tennessee community, at the old ford, just upstream of U.S. Highway 411. To get there, take the first road on the right north of the bridge, then cross the railroad tracks. The ford will be 1/2 mile further on the right. This far upriver, the current is faster, and the water is a bit cooler and shallower.

Along the way, you'll come to a deep pool at the railroad trestle, where the locals have rigged up an awesome rope swing. You'll pass under a beautiful, old one-lane arch span, then float on past gorgeous farmland.

Just below Georgia Highway 225, there's a nice, gravel beach, where we've had many tasty lunches. It's also a nice put-in, or take-out, spot for shorter trips.

The gravel beach, just off of Georgia Highway 225, at the Tennessee-Georgia stateline.

Just below the stateline, there are several small islands and shoals that bear paying close attention to. The water's cool and fast, just right for both Spotted Bass and Redeye Rock Bass.

The usual take out point for the Upper Float is at Weber Road, just upstream from Carlton Petty's dairy farm. There's a short portage to the road, from the river, but nothing major. Be advised, though, you'll have to arrange for someone to pick you up. The shoulder of the road, around the bridge, is posted as No Parking, although no one ever seems to heed them.

F.Y.I. - The Triple C Market (convenience store) is 3/4 of a mile east of the Weber Road bridge. They offer a little bit of everything.
